SmartHost conflicts with Sender Verification

Note: turning off Sender Verify has cured my ills, but it would be nice if I could still perform this check.

i don't understand why it's using the smarthost for sender verification. It doesn't make sense.

It IS using the smarthost, but it's not using authentication with the smarthost.  It appears to be a bug.

Bugs by there very nature tend not to make sense.

i know, but the sender verification could be done by it self. that's what i wanted to say.  why should it use the smart host for sender verification? it should use it only for sending mails, because of dynamic ip, no rdns, etc.

Smarthosts are used for several reasons.  One is security.  I've had suspicions of folks at my ISP capturing my mail.  to circumvent this, I use an SSL encrypted smarthost well outside the realm of those at my ISP.  If sender verification were not using the smarthost, folks with access to my traffic could still determine with whom I'm communicating if not the content of the communications.  So, there are reasons for running everything through a smarthost, but for most people, this is an unnecessary level of paranoi... errr... security.   It looks like this implementation of sender verify w/ smarthost is broken.  It should work.

hey your point of view is ok. didn't see it like this before. hope they fix it soon, because it's broken since the beginning of v5.
