BIG PROBLEM!!!: SMTP Proxy Failure!

I upgraded to version 5.200 a week ago. Last Fri. I started noticing that the SMTP proxy has been failing to deliver mail intermittently. No error messages, mail is just lost in a "blackhole". Verified by sending MANY test messages. I can fix it every time by reseting the SMTP proxy. It happened 3 times that I know of, today!

Here's some errors I found from the log:

server_plain authenticator failed H=smtp-sbc-v1.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com [xx.xxx.xxx.137] 535 authorization failed (#5.7.0)

AND

R=smarthost T=remote_smtp defer (-42): authentication required but authentication attempt(s) failed

AND

R=smarthost T=remote_smtp defer (-53): retry time not reached for any host (This one is repeated MANY times!)

I am not using content filtering, spam filtering, or SMTP authetication. I do have  smarthost enabled (obviously), with login and password. These settings have not changed since day one.

I'm positive it's not my ISP, because the problem is immediately resolved when re-starting the the SMTP Proxy!

This has never happened before, only after upgrade to 5.200. Any ideas?

    THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE A HUGE PROBLEM!!!!!
    Happened again this morning! AS soon as I restarted the SMTP Proxy and then sent another email, it flushed out about 100 emails that were not sent because of THIS!!!

    again the error was:

    R=smarthost T=remote_smtp defer (-53): retry time not reached for any host 

    Hard to believe no one else is experiencing this.

    If the emailserver is not reachable, Astaro stores the emails in the email queue (the proxy content manager) temporarly. Normally no email is lost by Astaro. Please check, if you can find the lost emails in /var/chroot-smtp/spool/input or Finput.
    Is the problem reproduceable? What exactly is reported in the log when you reproduce the problem? Do you use the Action blackhole in one of SMTP-Proxy's configuration? Is there enought diskspace on every partition?

    The thing is, the emailserver is working fine and is reachable. All I have to do to get the email working again is restart the Proxy server, and it will immediately send all those "stored" messages as soon as I send a fresh message (which gets the "ball rolling again"). I was wrong in my first post that the emails were lost (well except one I know of for sure was lost). But it's getting hung a few times a day. I can't duplicate it, as it seems to be random. I looked at what happened in the logs this morning, and it is sending messages just fine (as it has a "completed" entry for each email sent), but then the emails started stacking up. Here's the log (The first two entries that I pasted, completed fine):

    ARE very interesting, as they only come up AFTER the emails start piling up! Then of course I get countless errors like this:

     I only put in a "FEW" of these errors from the log into this post, but there are tons more!

    Agian, the SMTP proxy cannot recover on it's own when this happens. Restarting the SMTP Proxy is the only thing that corrects it!

    Agian, the SMTP proxy cannot recover on it's own when this happens. Restarting the SMTP Proxy is the only thing that corrects it!

    UPDATE!
    IT happened AGAIN, this time reseting the SMTP proxy did not work. Then I reset the firewall, and after it had been up and running for about 5-10 minutes the proxy started working again.
    EDIT: It seems that as I now track my logs that alot of the time (not all), this problem is lasting about 18-20 minutes and then it corrects itself??? This would make some sense as to why many may not notice the problem!!!

    I have a personal account that uses the same SMTP outgoing server, and I tested  it while the SMTP proxy was acting up. With my personal account using the same SMTP server, email can be sent no problem. I tested via my web account so I bypassed the SMTP proxy to test the personal account. I also tested by bypassing the proxy and opening the packet filter rule for SMTP.  I had no problem sending email this way either!

    So knowing the SMTP sever with the ISP is working fine for sure. What's going on??????? [:S]

    This looks to me like the receiving mail server is at fault.  Please post your hardware specs.  (CPU, RAM, HARD DISK)

    Can you retry without using smarthost?

    Hardware specs: 1Ghz PIII, 512MB RAM, 120GB HD.

    It works fine without the smarthost and SMTP proxy.

    The Smarthost sends all email to an external SMTP server to be delivered, each time authenticating (at least in my case). 

    When I bypass the proxy, I have no problem sending email through that external SMTP server.

    For those who run the SmartHost, I'd be inerested in what you find in your logs. It seems to go down only for about 20 minutes or so and then starts up again. For most I would think it would be pretty transparent, meaning you would not notice unless you looked very closely at it. Even if someone is waiting for a particular email, they will likely not notice if it's delayed 20-30 minutes. No one at my work has, except me when testing! 
    I originally found out by sending an email to all our users (which includes me by definition). After 5 minutes I checked to see if I received the email and I did not. So I went to my mailbox at our ISP to see if it was in the "Inbox", and it was not. We do not have an internal email server. Everything goes "out" and then comes back in if we send to local users. And usually it takes seconds for this to occur. I happened to send that email when the proxy was not passing the email. Like I said, I later bypassed the proxy during one of these "down times", and the external SMTP server sent it without problems!

    some isp mail server do not accept smarthosts or run broken software.  My father-in-laws isp has this issue.  Smarthosting just doesn't work for some reason.  With my Verizon DSL line i use my ASL's smarthosting feature quite easily.

    Like I said in my original post, it's been working perfectly until 5.200. And it still works now, it's just that a few times a day, it stops working for about 20 minutes, then starts up again. Check your SMTP Proxy logs since installing 5.200, and see if you can find any of those "T=remote_smtp defer (-53)" errors anywhere.

    P.S. You may not find any if you don't send much email. We average around 150-200 emails sent a day.

    What smarthost are you using and how are you authenticating?

    So you are using the SMTP-Proxy only for outgoing email? How do you receive incomming email?

    In V5.103 and lower Astaro established one connection for each email. Since V5.200 Astaro sends multiple emails in one connection, if not using BATV. So there is a difference in the behaviour of sending emails. Especially if a lot of emails are sent at the same time. Normally all SMTP servers should be able to handle multiple emails in one connection. Anyway it might be possible your smarthost is not able to accept connection with more than a specific amount of emails in it.

    Another idea: Maybe your smarthost does not accept more than a certain amount of connections/emails a second. Some providers limit the amount of email which can be send in a second. This might be the reason for error messages like:
    421 resources temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. 
    and
    535 authorization failed (#5.7.0)

    After talking with Steve at OfficeDefender, it seems clear that Xeno is most likely correct.

    BTW: I do use the SMTP proxy for outgoing mail only (authenticating with username and password entered in the SMTP proxy), and we use the POP3 proxy for incoming mail. 

    It must be the multiple emails per one connection thing as of version 5.200 (or some other change as of the new version). Because everything was working flawlessly with the SmartHost option in the SMTP proxy for the year or so before 5.200. 
    Oh well, from what I understand the SmartHost really is meant to be used more for an internal mail server. Granted it will probably continue to work for home users and for small compaines that don't send allot of email and use their ISP's SMTP server. But it looks like we will have to discontinue using it this way, really too bad as it was extremely convienent!

    I believe I've found problems with the Sender Verify spam protection function combined with the use of a smarthost.  

    It appears that the Sender Verify does NOT authenticate to the smarthost which creates loads of problems and in my case an SMTP denial of service state.  This appears to be similar to what you're experiencing.

    The Sender Verify DOES use the smarthost for it's verification per my logs, but the fact that it does not authenticate is the problem.  

    I'd like others to verify my findings.
    If this is the case, as I mentioned in my thread, I'd like to request that Astaro include the following options/functionalities in the use of Sender Verify:

    1) By default, circumvent the use of the smarthost when attempting to verify the sender.
    2) Allow for the optional use of AUTHENTICATED Smarthosts when verifying the sender of emails.
