How do I change POP3 Timeout on Linux/OS X?

Anyone know how to change the POP3 timeout setting for Linux and the Unix based OS X?  Both of these seem to use some global timeout setting and they are timing out to quickly when large emails are being scanned by the POP3 proxy AV engine. They seem to have about a 1 minute limit, after that both Thunderbird and Macs built-in email client timeout. There is no where in either client to set the timeout for POP3. 

All my windows machines never timeout, they just keep waiting for the Proxy to download the large email. Not so with the 3 Macs and 1 Linux machine we have though. Since I'm not a big Linux/Unix guy I really don't know where to look. I've seached endlessly on the Web with no luck. Ironically, I'm finding alot of people with the same problem though, but no answers. [:(]

    For those of you who may have this problem and are using Thunderbird, I found the fix!

    Thunderbird has an optional extension file to install called about:config that enables you to change the POP3 timeout setting! The default for Mac OS X and Linux versions of Thunderbird is 45 seconds, change it to 300, and it works like a charm! Here's the URL:  about:config to change POP3 timeout

    Hmm in Firefox I knew the extended configuration about:config. Is just like an URL you have to type in. But where do I have to type in that string in Thunderbird?

    First you download the extension from that link I posted. Then In Thunderbird you go to > Tools > Extensions. Then you click on the "install" button and navigate to where you saved the about:config extension. After it's installed, you will then have to close Thunderbird and re-open it. Then you will find the about:config file loacted under the "Tools" menu. Click on it, then you can find the POP3 timeout setting easy by typing in "timeout" in the filter field! Like I said on the other machines I configured it's default was 45 seconds.

    You can also edit prefs.js directly (close the program first).
