To which should Domain MX point

I have been having a number of issues in configuring our e-mail server on an Astaro DMZ. While doing some research I started wondering: Should I have our Domain MX pointing to the e-mail server on the DMZ or to the Astaro firewall? Thanks, in advance . . .

    That will all depend on whether the address of your server in the DMZ uses a "private" number (172..., 192..., 10...) or not. If you are not using private IP numbers on your DMZ and you own them, the MX can point to that. Otherwise it will have to point to the (presumably) real address on the external interface of Astaro...

    If you would like to use Astaro's SMTP Proxy and all the functionality which comes with it, you must set the MX record to point to the IP of Astaro.

    Thanks, that would be good, the use of Astaro's SMTP Proxy. Our DMZ segment  is a range of private addresses, as is our internal segment and I am fighting the issue where I can see internal mail in the cache but it is not getting to the mail server on the DMZ. I have not yet even tried to deal with any external mail.

    Is there a "generic receipe" (e.g.: 1st do this, 2nd do something like this, ad nauseum) of steps necessary to configure an e-mail server on an Astaro DMZ which:
    - Mitel SME 6 mail server on DMZ
    - uses private IP address
    - MUST send outbound mail through the ISP's SMTP server (have e-mail server configured to do this - I think 
    - would like to have all mail stored on internal server
