This has nothing to do with SMTP... 
If you enable your SMTP proxy you can tell your internal mail server to user ASL as "smart host". ASL will take care of delivering your emails without configuring any MASQ - the same for incoming email.

But: you have to configure your SMTP proxy in the right way

Yes, you *can* do it this way. It depends on what you like to achieve.

ASL beeing your smart host doesn´t necesseraly increase your security but can make it harder to troubleshoot problems.
On the other hand it can help you detect emails sent by your users that have virus attached (if not already checked on the internal mail server).

ASL for incoming email is a *must* since it works like a first lilne of defense againts attacks targeted at your internal mail server (not to forget to block spam, virus, etc.)

I do not know the documentation to ASL but I´m quite sure there is a HowTo about configuring the SMTP relay.
At least you can have a look at http://www.astaro.com/kb/ where you look for SMTP and will find a lot of information.

Right!
Send email directly to ASL. ASL will take care of forwarding. But you have to send emails to ASL. If you send it directly to a public IP, the SMTP-Proxy would be bypassed, because it does not work in transparent mode. If you are not allowed to send email or if you have to use your provider's email server, you have to configure the "smarthost" option of ASL.

I have selected to send to ASL and thought that it wasn't working, however on further investigation most of the messages are actually being sent! Yahooooo!  Unfortunately some emails are not being sent so upon checking the Proxy content managment I have located them there, I have then forced SMTP delivery...then most of them will actually be sent they don't arrive at there destination though...what causes an email to end up in proxy content? [:S]

Are the addresses correct, you should be able to see an error message in the Proxy Content Manager.
Look in the column just to the right of AGE
Hover the mouse over the [!] icon and you should see text describing the error.
ie error 550 Unknown User or similar.

Email providers are all making test to make sure you are not a spammer. Every providers uses more or less extensive tests. Some of the providers are checking your IP address for valid reverse lookup for example. Others are blocking all dynamic IP ranges of some big internet providers (t-online for instance) for example. So you might should check your IP, DNS, MX-records, ...

Have a look into the smtp logfile to find out what's wrong.

The following two entries werer found in the SMTP Proxy log file...Any idea as to why these emails weren't being sent?

First error apearse if the emailserver does not respond several times. Then the emailserver will be set on a kind of blacklist which prevents astaro from trying again and again. After some hours the emailserver will be remove automatically from the list and Astaro tries to reach the server again.

The second one my be realted to a broken internet connection or a hardwareproblem on the NIC. The connection broke during sending.

Thanks,  I've started to wonder whether there might be a hardware problem, so am going to install ASL on another machine and see if that one works any better...

The SMTP proxy works best if you have the DNS proxy enabled as well I have found.
