HELP! POP3 Proxy Extremely Slow!!

Hi,

I just started a recent thread regarding POP3 Proxy problems. However I finally started to look at the live log.Watching it, it takes forever for astaro (ver. 5.026 and 5.027) to download even small messages around 20-30Kb. Many times hanging Thunderbird 0.8 indefinately. Then I have reboot Astaro for it to even try again. However, recently this won't even work. I have to find the first email that is in que on our hosted email server via http login and delete it. Then reboot Astaro before it will work again. I'm getting 2-3 cases of this a day for the past week and a half. I'm wondering if somehow packets our intermittently being lost. We have about 20 employees with only 1-3 of them having a problem a day. And it's different users that are having the problem each day.

This is using VP (turned off spam filtering), 1Ghz PIII, 512 MB ram, 120GB hard drive. It just started happening last week before I upgraded to 5.027. I just upgraded last night and it continues this morning! [:(]

    Have you tried another e-mail client?  Also jpegs are now virus carriers and that may be hanging the a/v vp.  Could you send one of those mails to me so I can see what happens here?

    Yes, we've tried Eudora and Mozilla as well. 
    I found out it's not just jpegs. It is any email mesage over 10-20 Kb, including just normal text. I'll give you an example, one user had an eamil that was 50 Kb (all text no attachment), it took over 4 minutes for it to download. We have been using the POP3 proxy for months and it usually just zips the emails down very fast, untill the last week or so. Surfing and downloading files seems to be just as fast as it's always been. POP3 proxy is the only problem?

    Sounds like your only issue is the pop3 proxy.  I routinely recieve 2-10 megs attachments on this little machine and while it takes af ew minutes at the most it is nothing nearly as significant as what you are seeing.  i would open a support ticket with Astaro.

    Have you tried it with and without the proxy? Your messages don't indicate.

    Sorry I did not mention, but it works great without proxy. I've done some extensive testing today. You know what the big problem is? HTML! I should have guessed it, and I don't know why I have not noticed it before. Maybe it's just been an issue with 5.026 and 27. I ran on 5.024 the longest (2 months) and I sure didn't notice it then. Even with VP and SP turned off in the POP3 proxy, I get the same exact problem.

    Using the virus warning HTML message from Astaro as a test, it takes anywhere from 40 seconds to 1.5 minutes on average to download thier 35.5 Kb message!  [:O]h.

    This is really a bummer. It's pretty bad when users can't download a small HTML email, which some can't because thier email client times out!

    Iit is not a cpu speed issue..I run http proxy in transparent mode. 8 NAT rules around 10 packet filter rules, IPS, content filter with a/v, pop3 with a/v, dhcp, dns proxy and while it may chug in webadmin it runs fine otherwsie.  What is interesting though is that I have 8 pop3 accounts in my mozilla profile that get checked every 5 minutes and my wife has about 10.  We get tons of html mails without issue.  Let me ask you this, do all the html mails that are causing this issue come from the same domain or domains?

    The HTML emails are from all different sites. Like I said the easiest test was to keep forwarding the Astaro Virus notification emails to myself. Though I tested other html emails as well, just to be sure.

    I would first sent a support ticket to astaro.  Depnding on your setup you may want to consider downloading the latest 5.0x iso and reinstalling..I would let Astaro chew on this one.  

    Here is something i did.  Try using the secure shell(others will skewer me for suggesting this) and then su into root.  Next type swapoff -a.  Wait for the hdd to stop chomping..then type swapon -a.  Reboot the box and try your html tests again.  I have a WAG but it may work.

    Thanks, I'll try that. I'm hoping you're suggesting that I try this before re-installing. If it does not work I will call the Astaro partner OfficeDefender, as I opted not to pay for the service contract.

    I'll try your suggestion tomorrow, off to go eat dinner, play with kids, etc. [:)]
