SMTP Proxy and external mail server

Seeing as the pop3 still has issues with the spam filter( I have it on pass 1 and quarantine 3 and stuff still gets through)

Is there a way to setup smtp proxy to filter out email from an external email server. If change the mx settings on our external dns server to point to the external side of the ASL box then have ASL filter the mail and send it off to the external email server? 

Is the mx record for both pop3 and smtp? 

or is there a fix coming out for the pop3 proxy?
