SMTP Proxy Question

Hello,

We have been using ASL v4 for quite a while now. Excellent product.

I have a simple question regarding the SMTP proxy. I originally understood that ASL proxied outbound mail as well as inbound mail. I quote from the ASL online help "    If your local mail server or mail clients should be able to use the firewall as an outgoing mail relay, you must add the networks or hosts who should be able to send mail via the relay to the list here." to me this means that if you set your allowed outbound mail hosts in the allowed network box that their mail connections will be proxied and the ASL will handle the mail delivery. However I have witnessed this to not be the case.

Is the outbound smtp proxy not functioning on ASL v4?

    Yes it works fine.  You need to point your SMTP clients/server to the ASL box for it to work.  (ie It's not transparent proxying).

    I recently asked a similar question.  (here) 
    There it was said that ASL did not proxy mail outbound.

    Can you add a bit more detail on how to proxy outbound SMTP in ASL (v5.x)
    If this was done, would it also scan this mail for viruses as it does inbound?
    I am using Exchange2003 as my mail server.

    I think Simon is correct, give it a try and report back if it worked for you.  What I was thinking in the other thread was that you were trying to proxy mail through the SMTP proxy to an external mail server.  However, if all you're trying to do is use the SMTP proxy as a relay agent, I think that works OK from the inside out.

    I'm unsure what spam filtering you will get using ASL for *outbound* proxy, I have not tested it in that regard, and I have not tried emailing a virus out.  It may only examine such items on *inbound* email.

    But, to use ASL as an outbound SMTP proxy, activate SMTP proxy, activate DNS proxy, configure DNS proxy.

    Add your internal network to the SMTP proxy "allowed networks" field.

    Point mail clients to the internal interface of the ASL box.
    Ensure staff are allowed outbound SMTP

    Should be good to go.
