If I enable the HTTP Proxy, using an Operational Mode of Standard, I setup IE to use the proxy on 8080 and it all just runs.
Whatever Allowed Target Services are selected are passed through the firewall and allow internet access without adding any additional Packet Filter rules.
This is how I perceived a proxy should work.
Having said that, I am unable to create the same scenario with the SMTP Proxy.
If I do not add a specific rule   ExchangeServer – SMTP – ANY – Allow   I cannot send mail out of my internal network.
I would have thought that adding my Exchange server to the Outgoing Mail – Allowed Networks box was all that would be necessary. Apparently not.
As I started, am I missing something very basic here?

    The SMTP Proxy in Astaro is designed to work on the INBOUND side.  In other words, it fronts your internal mail server and clean off viruses and filters spam before forwarding to your internal mail server.  Some folks have claimed to make it work the other direction, but that's not what it's designed to do and any results from doing this may be unpredictable.

    Actually thats not true, the above poster is in error ASL SMTP proxy acts as a proxy in both directions and is designed to do just that.

    That way you not only protect your inbound email from virii etc but also you protect everyone else if you get a nasty virus on the inside of your network.

    You didn't mention what version of Exchange server you are using but in 5.5 you would set the ASL as the "Forward all Messages to Host" in the "Connections" tab on the IMS in MS Exchange Administrator, or if you are using Exchange 2000 or 2003 I think you need to set the upstream smarthost in the SMTP Service on the server (as 2k and 2k3 use the IIS SMTP server if I remember correctly)
