POP3 Proxy - Confused

I have been waiting for DNS/POP3 proxy issues to be resolved. Now that 5.011 has been released, I have turned POP3 proxy on, but maybe I do not understand what this feature is for.
Is it to proxy outgoing POP3 connections or incoming, or both.

What I want is for incoming POP3 requests to hit the proxy and be refered to internal POP Server, thereby effectively masking the internal server. Is this possible and how should it be set up. I am sure I had this working correctly in version 4.

    The POP3 Proxy proxies mail traffic from an external mail server to internal users.  If you want to serve POP3 mail to external users, you should create a DNAT rule to direct the POP3 traffic to the appropriate internal server, and then create the filter rule to permit those packets.

    This is how I am currently doing it and it is working fine, but this functionality is not using the POP Proxy at all. I thought that the ASL POP Proxy could be used for external POP requests coming in. I am sure this was working in this manner in Version 4 OK. What I mean is, shouldn't the POP Proxy be visable from external on port 110, just like the SMTP Proxy is visable on port 25 ?

    Here is a direct quote from the ASL 5 manual:


    "This menu allows you to configure the POP3 Proxy for incoming emails. The POP3 proxy works transparently, requiring no configuration on the client side. POP3 requests coming from the internal network on port 110 are intercepted and redirected through the proxy. This process is not visible to the client. The advantage of this mode is that no additional administration or configuration is required on the client of the end user."

    It is not recommended to try to use a feature for something it is not designed to do.  Both the SMTP proxy and the POP3 proxies serve INTERNAL clients.  In the case of the SMTP proxy, it is designed to serve an INTERNAL mail server.  In the case of the POP3 proxy, it is designed to serve an INTERNAL client computer.  The SMTP proxy serves an internal mail server by proxying outside emails to the inside.  The POP3 proxy serves internal clients by proxying outside mail servers to the inside.

    However, I dont understand why POP Proxy from inside would be of any use as POP requests are essentially pulling mail where SMTP is being pushed. Makes more sense to me to have the POP proxy answering POP requests from outside and forwarding to internal mail server, thereby effectively masking the internal mail server. As I said earlier, I had this scenario working in ver 4.

    Maybe someone from ASL could comment on the merits of this.
