I just don't get it...Please help me understand...

Hi all,

I'm having trouble wrapping my head arround what I need to do to get my email working...

First, A bit of background info...

I have my own domain, I have smtp relay configured (correctly I think) for that domain.  I have my own exchange server on my network and I want to use the SMTP proxy for it.

So on my email client (outlook) I have my personal domain set up.  In addition to my personal domain/exchange email account, I have 2 other email accounts set up (with my ISP).

Now that I am trying to get ASL5 worked into my network, outlook says it cannot reach my ISPs smtp server.

I'm thinking that the smtp proxy being set up for my personal domain is keeping me from being able to reach my ISPs mail server to send email.

Is my thinking right?  What do I need to do to fix it?

I have smtp proxying configured and turned on according to the directions (i believe)  When I finished configuing it I received a bunch of emails to my domain email address, so I assume that means it is working.  

I also have POP3 proxying turned on.  with a rule that says proxy from any to outside network.

I am able to send and receive mail from my personal domain, but I cannot send or receive email from my ISP email accounts.

I don't know what other info would be helpfull to post as I don't know where the problem lies.  I would be glad to post additional information if you can tell me what info is needed.

    You're going to need SMTP outbound for the POP clients; does the POP proxy do that? (sorry, I'm an IMAP type of guy...)

    telnet your_ISP_mail_server 25

    to see if you get a mail server "banner" timestamp from the workstation doing POP.

    Now if you want your POP users to be going out the SMTP proxy, you will have to configure the proxy to accommodate the two domains: your Exchange server, and your ISP's. But a telnet...25 can show you what's happening. Do a Search on this board or the 'Net.

    So what will it be on the outbound POP? Will your POP clients point at your ISP's mail server or Astaro??

    There's another utility called "ding" that does a simple SMTP handshake, but I find you can do more troubleshooting if you simulate a simpleton mail transmission yourself...

    I can't telnet to port 25 of the pop server. [:(]

    I added the domain of my ISP to the smtp proxy, but still no luck.

    I far as where my computers pop to reach the ISPs pop/smtp servers, I currently have my laptop set to g odirectly to the ISP's mail server for pop/smtp.  (basicly I have a cable modem and have an email address with them)

    Outlook can talk to my local exchange server just fine, so I don't really know where to go from here.

    So if you want to go directly to your ISP's POP server, you will need to add two rules:

    Internal SMTP SMTP_Server Allow
    (some do this as Internal SMTP Any Allow)
    Internal POP POP_Server Allow

    The POP server is not always your SMTP server at the ISP; some ISPs don't even offer you an SMTP server; your client has to send the mail directly to your recipients mail server(hence an Internal SMTP Any rule...)

    Because of virii that pack SMTP transfer agents, you can consider tightening the Internal to just a network group that talks SMTP/POP.

    On the other hand, if you want to try using Astaro's proxy, then I sugest you telnet to it (not your ISP), and try sending simple messages (look at Posts to see how to do it; it takes about five commands...). You can behave as if you were your mail client and see what messages you get talking to Astaro (like "relaying not allowed"!). Sounds like your proxy is definitely not configured right, otherwise Astaro can route out mail to your ISP's proxy; and Astaro has a POP proxy too (for those who love this creaky old mail protocol...)

    P.S. Nice enough of Astaro to accommodate people with their stale protocol formats, though...

    When you say SMTP_Server are you saying to make a network entry for the ISPs servers (smtp and pop servers) (I don't have access to the firewall right now as I am at work, so I can't remember the term, but basicly a host entry like you have to do to put a box in a DMZ)?

    so, ask a differnt way, should the rule read 
    Internat SMTP ISPs_SMTP_Server Allow

    If that is the case, is it possible to use a hostname as opposed to an IP when you create a new host entry?

    Also, you are correct, my ISP has a POP server and a SMTP server that are different.

    Lastly, I think all things considered, I would rather use Astaro as a smtp and pop proxy for those connections.

    When you say my proxy isn't set up correctly, are you saying the pop proxy or the smtp proxy or both?  According to the v5 manual you basicly just need to turn the pop proxy on.  

    As for the SMTP proxy, I really have no idea.  I know that I get emails on my personal domain/email server that are created by Astaro (changes, reboots, etc) so I believe the SMTP proxy is correct for my home domain.  From there I just added the ISP's domain as an allowed network (can't remember the field name, but it's the same place you define your network domain and chose if it's a MTA record, host, etc)

    I will try the telnet trick when I get home and post the results.  

    Is there additional informatino I can provide at this point?

    Yeah, add a Network definition for the ISP's servers; that's what it's made for. And a Network Group for the workstations using POP.

    A nice thing about SMTP is that once you learn a  simple set of commands, you can troubleshoot problems (whereas other protocols -say RPC- are binary and cannot be troubleshooted without additional layers of software tools...)

    Search here and on the 'net for sample telnet...25 dialogs...

    Well I got it (kinda)...

    I gave up on the mail proxys for the time being and just forwarded the ports between my inside interface and my ISPs mail servers.

    Not the exactly the solution I was working for, but it works [:)]
