Rquirement for my UTM Home

Hi here in forum :-) I just saw the HW Requirement for the UTM Sophos. My question ist about the hardware expected for my home use, not in my company.
I saw the the utm is for free use at home. Would be a low pc (f.e. HP MicroServer N36L Athlon2 1,3GHz Dual Core) enough power?
On the homepage 2x1,5Ghz is rquired. Is it a recommendation, or will it not start with 2x1,3.... Thx a lot for support....

  • Depending on the features you would like to use (IPS) and the speed of your internet connection an atom processor may be to weak to benefit of your internet speed. When you give us more information about the speed of your connection and whether or not you would like to enable Intrustion Prevention (IPS) and the number of devices in your home environment that you estimate will be simultaneously using the UTM we can give you better advice.

  • Ok.... I would like to user IPS. The most reason is, that I will get familiar with the product for my job. Secondary, security. My speed is 6Mbit, will raise to 16Mbit at the end of the year and end of next year 50mbit. There are 2 Iphone and 2 IPads running. One HP Microserver Gen 8 with 16GB runing vCenter 6.0 with 4 virtual machines (Server 2012 and Win10), but they are not doing very much, they are just running for testing purposes, Backups and sometimes bigger downloads.

My first idea was to use the sophos on the same device, I already installed it as VM, but I am not sure of the Celeron will manage this....

  • .... and I forgot some streaming devices like Amazon Fire TV :-)

  • i recommend a cheap zotac ci 323 with 120gb ssd and 8 gb ram... no noise, low power and meets your requirements..

i run webfilter / IPS / 1 ipsec-vpn on my ci 321 and it runs smooth with my 100Mbit line... similar hardware at my home.. (some iphones, some tablets, some notebooks, amazon firetv and stick...)

  • Oh yes... this looks very fine to me... 2x Lan and enough power :-)

I think, this will be my new friend.... Thx to all... (will be here in the community the next time very often ... haha )
