Would mirroring work?

Are you thinking to re-deploy UTM on a new hardware ? You can take a backup and make sure all the physical connections are ditto.

Yes  -  I am thinking of redeploying onto new hardware. I was wondering if I could mirror the contents of my existing harddisk onto the harddisk in the new machine. Is there an echo in here?! :-) :-)

There's no echo, just a huge different between mirroring a hard drive and backing up a UTM configuration through WebAdmin. Once you have UTM running on your new hardware just import the UTM backup file from the old hardware.

Thanks for the replies but I'm still in search of a straight answer. Will mirroring not work? I already know that it's possible to backup and restore from file - I'm asking here if it's possible to mirror?

The underlying OS is not plug-n-play.  It's "hardened" Linux with only the drivers installed for the devices found on the device onto which the ISO is installed.  Even then, there are very new devices for which it has no drivers.  It's unlikely that any new device will use an identical set of drivers.
