Ability to receive alerts from Sophos UTM 9.x about underlying HP DL380 G9 Hardware.

Hello, hope you are well.

I am currently running Sophos UTM 9.353-4 on two HP DL380 G9 servers in a HA mode.

Our company's standard tool set to monitor server hardware for UNIX/Linux or Microsoft Windows is BMC Patrol. This requires the HP Insight Agents to be installed on the server OS level for BMC Patrol to be able to monitor hardware events such as failed fans and degraded hard disks.

I am wondering with our new UTM setup if there is a way for the Sophos UTM to generate E-Mail alerts if for example one of the hard disks fails on the HP array of either Master or Slave UTM's.

I am trying to avoid a worst case scenario where Master UTM fails (for whatever reason) and the HA fails-over to the Slave UTM and that was in a state where one hard disk in the HP RAID mirror has failed. I appreciate that the system would still be up but it would mean the redundancy is now much more critical.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Dave

  • Hi Bob, Thanks for the warm welcome.

I have already seen this post and attempted to run the command mentioned. I think the error message I got was something along the lines of "hardware no detected" or something like that. I put the error down to the fact that I am probably running my UTM's on different hardware and the command was looking for a different array card.

I appreciate you taking the time to assist me. We are migrating a customers TMG Servers to Sophos UTM so I am from a Windows background where we normally run the HP Insight Agents on the OS and then install the BMC Patrol Agents and configure SNMP.

I have only been working with the Sophos UTM since November last year and find it a very cool bit of tech.

I have also found that the HP DL380 Gen9 server has some features of its iLO card that may be of use. It seems like the iLO card can send SNMP traps to up to three different hosts for system critical events independent of the OS Insight Agents. I will explore this feature and update.

    Regards,

    Dave
