9.31xx Or 9.35xx path - confused as to which to follow with Updates

OK - Now that the 9.353-4 patch has been released that seems to have fixed the problems the previous patch introduced, I am considering applying updates to my production UTMs.

What I am STILL uncertain of is exactly which of the parallel development paths to follow.  My production UTM is sitting at version 9.315-2 where it has been very stable and just humming along (I have two identical Dell Poweredge servers running in HA).  I have read through some of the posts and documentation dealing with the split development paths and still am confused by it all.  We do NOT use any Sophos Wifi or RED devices, so I do not care about feature advancements in that area.  I do use application control though, so improvements in that interest me.  I (as we all) do want the latest, most stable, and secure code and fixes.

To that end....  9.31  or 9.35 ??!!!  And when will they "join" to be 9.4, and can I afford to wait that long (my UTM is showing 7 updates available right now at 9.315-2).  I don't like jumping a ton of updates at one time either.

Advice and thoughts welcome and appreciated!

  • I'm not aware, Erik, if they intend to release a 9.319 that corresponds to 9.353. I'm wait another week to have my clients go from 9.317 to 9.353. In the meantime, for those without a RED 15 or an AP 55, I've recommended that they all go to and stay at 9.317.

  • Thanks for the reply, Bob. So 9.317 is a good stable place to be as well? I will update my two UTMs to that level in the next few days then. I just wish Sophos made it much clearer as to what the differences in the split paths are and kept the PATCHES the same on both forks (I sort of get the added feature set being different).
  • I will email my clients on Friday to go to9.353 unless Sophos gives us a 9.319.

    Cheers - Bob
