UTM SOHO Purchase advice

I've tried out the home versions of UTM 9 and XG. UTM 9 is clearly the better product. Too many things are just broken or not implemented in XG, besides the random crashes/reboots, to even bother buying that. I would stick with the UTM home version, but unfortunately the 50 IP limit is unworkable for me, too many devices and VMs on my network, plus I've read that devices with both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are counted twice and I do intend to implement IPv6 in the very near term.

I don't need a endpoint or WAP management. The only features I make use of are firewalling/IPS, WAF, and VPN.

I have hardware to run it on, but from what I can see the software only licenses are priced per user, which really means IP's and would be prohibitively expensive. So I guess I really have two questions, which would be the cheaper option SG105 or software only license? And can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable source to purchase UTM for the above purposes?

  • You need to ask cost questions directly from a reseller. The resellers on these forums are not allowed to discuss such things here. You only need to buy the modules that you want to use. No matter what, the costs are going to be high, as UTM is priced for businesses. Be aware that licensing is annual, not in perpetuity.

Whatever you do, DO NOT purchase from a web store. Their support is non-existent.

  • So, despite the name on this particular sub-forum, I shouldn't ask licensing questions here? It's pretty hard to go ask 100 resellers about pricing, which is why I ask here where I can get honest answers. I used to work for an MSP in the area, they're on the Sophos list actually, and I know many of the business names that show up on the partner locator for my area. I know what kind of margins they charge and I have no need for their services. I have no intention of using the reseller for support. My preference would be to buy directly from Sophos, and if that's not an option to deal with a reseller as absolutely little as possible.
  • Dave, I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 115, and that's pretty much the consensus here.

I do think you should consider modifying your topolgy and device configurations so that you can stay within the home-use license limits. Have your IP phones get time from an internal device so that they're not counted, etc.

  • I haven't been able to find much info or prices on the software license version, is that one licensed on IP count?
  • Yes, software is licensed by User (IP).

  • Hi Dave,

You cannot buy directly from Sophos, so you will have to contact a reseller. If you are interested in pricing, send me a private message describing the product and license you are interesed in.

I agree with Bob's advice, SG105 has only 2GB of RAM which would be potential bottleneck for UTM 9.3+ firmware versions.

    Hi Scott,

Is this a new rule, because there were many discussions on old Astaro forum on that topic ? I agree that pricing shouldn't be revealed in public, but can't see what is wrong with explaining licensing model in details for potential customers.
