To which UTM appliance the following hardware is similar and are the performances also similar?

Atom Rangley 8 cores C2758 (SUPERMICRO A1SRi-2758F), 8GB RAM, SSD SATAIII 256GB, SOPHOS UTM9 HOME FREE.

If the sophos will be virtualized on a bare metal VMWARE ESXI 5.5 installed on the hardware above, and will be the only VM, how much the virtualisation will affect performances?

  • You can find the datasheet for SG appliances at www.sophos.com/.../sophos-sg-series-appliances-brna.pdf, to do a comparison. With the UTM being the only VM, the only thing that may affect the performance, will be the amount of memory that has to be used by the Hypervisor.

  • Hello, thanks again for your answer.

I think the appliances have the following CPUs:

    SG-210 : Celeron® G1820 has a speed of 2.70 GHz (probable match for SG-210)
    SG-230 : Pentium® Processor G3420 has a speed of 3.20 GHz (probable match for SG-230)
    SG-310 : is a Intel® Core™ i3-4330 Processor,
SG-330 : probably is i5-4570S (sole quad i5-4th gen w/o HT and base speed of 2.9GHz)
    SG-430 : E3-1225 v3 has a turbo of 3.6GHz (probable match for SG-430)

I would like to know if UTM9 software care more about the number of cores or if it's "more powerful" augmenting the clock. (more powerful=more users, more speed in processing IPS/IDS tasks etc)

Basically : better 8 cores at 2.4Ghz or better 2/4 cores at 3.5Ghz?

    Thanks again for your feedback!
