UTM 9.352-6, ESXi v6, backup/restore via OVF Template == license problem

I'm preparing to deploy UTM9 (upgrade from 8) ... and am planning to switch from bare-metal to running under ESXi hypervisor, primarily to allow a "whole computer" backup/restore option (via vSphere export OVF template / deploy OVF template). 

I'm able to install & run no problem, backup & restore works ok, but the new instance has a licensing issue.

Details:  Create new VM, install UTM9 (do not install license, still in 30 day trial period), shutdown VM, backup VM using "Export OVF Template", restore VM, start VM ... and then attempt to log into WebAdmin, but be unable to do anything because the license is expired.  (Note all of this is within one afternoon -- well within the 30 day period).

I don't want to install a license -- I'm trying things out.  But I do need to make sure that this process works, and I don't want to have a license hassle when in disaster recovery. 

Is there any detail about licenses, backups & restores, ESXi, etc. that makes what I'm trying to do unworkable?  Am I missing something?  Help.
