Recomended home build

Hi everyone,

Im new to this forum and after browsing the forum for a few days, i would like to the experts there opinion for a newly home build.

My internet connection is 100 down and 15 up. My home lan is at 1GBIT with maximum 20 devices. (laptops, pc, tablets, phones, NAS  and some vlans).

im looking for a small power build who doesn't consumes to much energy, and can take all this workload. Also im planing to run all the features available on the UTM.

Can someone provide the right hardware for this build ? preferable a cheap one. 

For my understanding the minimum cpu is an i3 and 8GB ram.

    hbrui, when you look at your hardware reporting graph, what's your Swap usage?

    Swap usage for the time since installation (early in June this year) was avarage 3.06% and max 8.62%. Seems like swap builds up the longer the system is running. After restart (e.g. up2date) it starts at zero and slowly builds up over time (see attachment).

    i am re-evaluating a dedicated Sophos Home Box instead of running it on my ESXi Server. Is there anything fanless in Router Dimensions (nice little box) that might be able to get wall mounted and sports enough CPU for 2x 100mbit + some VPN ? :-)

    And that's using 1GB of RAM? How many users do you have on the network? Also I notice your Sig has a shuttle build, is this unrelated?

    Did you read my posting? Let me point out the part you may have missed:

    So right now I use the Shuttle system you can see in my signature. The small box was too old and sadly everything soldered onboard, so no upgrade possible.

    Why are you always recomending those high spec builds? 

    I used to have a small box with N270 Atom 1,6GHz and only 1 GB RAM (fixed, not upgradeable) which definitely reached it's limits with UTM 9.2. In preparation to my DSL-upgrade 6/0.6k to 100/20k (active since August 1st) I changed hardware in June to the Shuttle system outlined in my signature. Just checked Logging & Reporting > Hardware > yearly and I get CPU usage of 0.45% average and 26.43% maximum. Whenever I take a look at my dashboard CPU shows 0 or 1, even with videostreaming (Amazon Prime) usually below 10. (Firewall, IPS, webfilter, wireless protection, antivirus active). So basically the system is just idling.

    I believe a system like Shuttle DS57U to be sufficient for home use, even with a 100 Mbit VDSL-line. This barebone has a Intel Celeron 3205U and two Intel Gigabit network connections onboard. Pricepoint in Germany is around 200 Euros and you would need RAM and a HDD. UK shouldn't be noticable more expensive.  4GB RAM should be enough and can be upgraded if necessary; with copernicus home use may even be limited to 4GB, just look at the announcements. If you opt for this system remember to use DP-monitor connection (maybe with DP>VGA adapter), with HDMI baremetal installation will fail.



    I saw the warning about avoiding Atom based systems, but ...

    I would like to use a netbook (Samsung NC10 - 2GB RAM) to run UTM. My connection is only 1Mbps  :-( and there are about 10 devices max, so may be only about 3 accessing the Internet at the same time.

    Would it be possible to install UTM on a partition on the hard drive with Windows XP alongside? This is mostly for experimental purposes and I could later on use the netbook as a dedicated router / firewall or is it mandatory to dedicate the entire hard drive to UTM?

    Would I need 2 NICs? or is there someway to use the WiFi adapter as the second NIC. or any other workaround? I have a cisco router, but it has buggy firmware and I'd like to set it aside and use only the Netbook as my dedicated router.

    Hey Guys,

    don't wanted to open up an unnecessary new Post, but i´am too looking for a Homebuild Astaro.

    I read a lot of Topics and Posts recently but no one really helped me out in focus on Speed.
    My Internet Connection is 200 Down and 10 Up. My internal LAN is like everyone else 1Gbit. The thing is that i really need the Full WAN Speed internally. 
    Things like QoS, VPN, VLAN should be activated in this setup.

    I looked out to a Zotac Box (https://www.zotac.com/product/mini_pcs/zbox-m-series/all) but i wanted to check with you guys first because i´am not sure how much CPU Power QoS etc. takes.

    It would really help me to get my first Astaro running by my own.
