Recomended home build

I say this over and over.  Atoms are nice but limited upwards ability.  Get a core i-3.  Since you are running 100 megs you can get away with 2.0 ghz.  I would also get at least 8 gigs of ram.  Use a laptop hdd and your power profile will be comparable to an atom...especially the low power versions and you will easily be able to handle everything your network can throw at it...[:)]

William, he said he has a gigabit at his home, not 100 meg.  Wouldn't he need a 3+GHz quad-core to keep up with his gig pipe?  Even then, each user would be limited to maybe 300 meg - right?

i prefer a low power system since the electricity here in uk is quite expensive.

any change to have also wifi included on this kit to serve the guests at home ??

I've been looking at this system to run an i3, the onboard ports are 1 Intel and 1 Realtek which is weird but good. But is a little pricey at £110. 

Unfortunately onboard wi-fi on anything other than Sophos SG series appliances are not support for software installations. I've been trying many ways to get my Zotac Zbox CI321 wi-fi module to work to no avail. Plus this board has a full size PCI-E so you can install more NICs if needed.

I think next time the missus isn't looking at the bank i may have to sneak the funds out and have a play around with it.

This has dual Gigabit Intels which is a nice alternative.

Sadly both are DDR4 and will be expensive.

but this motherboard seems a bit expensive... also i prefer ddr3 has i have a few spares that i can probably use.

Any other motherboard and case i can use for this setup ?

The i3 i can get it quite cheap on ebay, but the mobo is my problem at the moment

If you search in the Wireless forum, you will find posts about a wireless NIC that works with Wireless Protection because it's nearly the same model as one built into one of the SG 1x5w devices.

Why are you always recomending those high spec builds? 

I used to have a small box with N270 Atom 1,6GHz and only 1 GB RAM (fixed, not upgradeable) which definitely reached it's limits with UTM 9.2. In preparation to my DSL-upgrade 6/0.6k to 100/20k (active since August 1st) I changed hardware in June to the Shuttle system outlined in my signature. Just checked Logging & Reporting > Hardware > yearly and I get CPU usage of 0.45% average and 26.43% maximum. Whenever I take a look at my dashboard CPU shows 0 or 1, even with videostreaming (Amazon Prime) usually below 10. (Firewall, IPS, webfilter, wireless protection, antivirus active). So basically the system is just idling.

I believe a system like Shuttle DS57U to be sufficient for home use, even with a 100 Mbit VDSL-line. This barebone has a Intel Celeron 3205U and two Intel Gigabit network connections onboard. Pricepoint in Germany is around 200 Euros and you would need RAM and a HDD. UK shouldn't be noticable more expensive.  4GB RAM should be enough and can be upgraded if necessary; with copernicus home use may even be limited to 4GB, just look at the announcements. If you opt for this system remember to use DP-monitor connection (maybe with DP>VGA adapter), with HDMI baremetal installation will fail.

I would go with 8 gigs as 4 gigs can now get pushed by utm 9
