Problem with PPOE on ESXi 6.0 with UTM

I'm running ESXi with a Xeon i7 equivalent and 32GB ram on a Lenovo with internal NIC and Intel quad gigabit NIC. Using the latest and greatest version (I've shut it down now... getting tired), 9.315 or similar.

I created the requisite virtual machine for UTM and made available the physical  and vm interfaces using VMware vswitches.

I can see the new NICs etc on ESXi and in the UTM, unfortunately I haven't been able to get PPOE working reliably. I looked at the logs and it just loops around saying PPOE discovery failed. I'm using VMX NET 3 interfaces at the VM end. I've chosen PPOE at the interface level for the raw internet NIC. It usually tells me the link and state is down. A laptop set to PPOE and the existing Asus AP tells me the link, VDSL modem and cable are fine. I've also put it on a switch, didn't make any difference, not a layer 1 incompatibility I believe.

Strange thing is that it worked for about 3 hours, then stopped once I started a 2nd instance of UTM, as I wanted to have a go at trying HA. I removed the 2nd UTM and deleted the vswitch it was on and recreated it, just in case it didn't like two mac addresses at the VDSL end. Didn't seem to make any difference :-(

I've fixed the NIC to 100 Full as well.

I'd really like to have UTM running in my ESXi, but I haven't managed to get it going again.

Any one any ideas ?
