Any inexpensive, used or old appliances (WatchGuard, Astaros, etc) for Sophos UTM?

Part of the reason you see Astaro ASG kit on the used market is because the hardware is too old to run the newer versions of the Sophos UTM software. A quick scan of ebay just now and the ASG 110/120's are cheap but also older models that certainly won't run recent editions of the UTM software. And the 220's listed, for those prices I can build a custom brand new Intel i3 board that'd run rings around the appliances.

I see some real old ones and some that appear to be newer Revs? Could you share which versions/ what rev after which they are decent products to look at. 

I figured I could pick up something decent below 100$ maybe little more. 

I was able to get a GiGE WatchGuard arond 50/60$ thats recommended on pFsense forums.. 

Can we not have similar suggestions for Sophos. 

PS: What would be the ballpark $$ of your i3 box you mentioned?

For appliance specs, this KB article is the best source of what's under the hood. Pretty much any appliance with less then 2GB RAM is not going to handle UTM 9.3xx. Even the latest SG105 w/ 2GB RAM is already on the edge from reports seen on this forum.

Biggest components that are hard on the appliance? IPS & Web Proxy. Proxy uses up a lot of memory. IPS is CPU constrained so the CPU's in older appliances will choke. I've brought a Rev 3 ASG120 to it's knee's running IPS on a single 6Mbps stream.

If you want to run pfSense on a ASG or UTM appliance, go for it, there's nothing tying the hardware to the software and specs are in that link.

I've built i3 based systems for under $400 before. Good dual core system w/ 8GB RAM is enough to handle a home license of UTM and the hinted at home license for Copernicus when it's ready for release. Don't have a current build sheet but it can be done. I've also built Atom based systems for under $350

my opinion:

hands off from these old appliances.

runs smooth.. just need the ci321, 8GB RAM and a 120Gb SSd is recommended.
