SG 230, 10 GBE Flexi-Port and HP 5406 switch

I would recommend using fiber SFP+ modules and connecting the devices by fiber. It may be a little more than buying a single Twinax cable, but you won't have to worry about compatibility issues. We've run into all sorts of compatibility problems between devices when trying to use Twinax cables for that exact reason you did. Certain devices or network cards require certain IDs of SFP+ in order to work.

that I would consider if I had enough space left in the switch enclosure but it is completely stacked with modules. I already contacted HP about this and hope that will work with one of their cables :-/

Ist did not work with HP J9283B cable. I checked ist a few minutes ago. So I think I have to buy the expensive GBICs.

The stuff finally arrived yesterday, everything is mounted but not connected yet - maybe I have the time to do this in the afternoon.

I'll let you know which cable I used and far more interestingly - if it works [:D]

I was really curious so I connected the new SG230 using two original HP X242 10G SFP+ SFP+ 7m DAC cables (P/N J9285B) to our HP ProCurve 5406zl (P/N J8697A) running ROM version K.15.30 / software K.15.15.30; the module on the switch is a  HP J9538A 8p 10G-GbE SFP+ v2 zl module.

No problem at all, I created a link aggregation group with the two FleXi-Ports as members and used this LAG as "ethernet hardware" to create an Ethernet VLAN interface which is pointing to our internal office network; afterwards I deleted the auto-created interface on eth0 which I don't need anymore and rebooted. At this point it is running perfectly [:)]

This concludes the thread for myself - I'd be really glad to help others with the setup.

Sounds good! But why isn`t it working here? Looks nearly all the same. I still have a SG330 an the DAC is shorter.... I connect both sites and did not get a link... Did you change something for the switchports?

Dear Sebastian,

I have configured the switchport as "enabled" and "tagged" all the VLANs.
Please try unplugging the cable and watch the switch's log when you plug them in again - this might bring up something about the cable - it did back in the day when they delivered wrong cables to connect our ESXi hosts. The allowed P/Ns are hardcoded into the switch's ROM, not all will work.

Let me know what the switch log tells you!
