SG 105 for home use, licensing

I've been running the ASG/Sophos UTM virtual appliance for about 5 years now, on a little celeron server ( Zotac IONITX-P-E review | TechRadar ).

I've thought several times about buying an hardware appliance, nowadays it would be an SG105, in order to not have to deal with the virtualization issue, specially on that resource-constrained celeron server, which I'm also using for other stuff (recording DVB-C TV, a huge mongodb database, lot's of little servers for my IoT Devices (Arduinos, Raspberry Pi's with sensors))

The issue is that these hardware appliances have this licensing-scheme which is based on very expensive yearly subscriptions which is a no-go for this home network.

I wonder if it would be possible to buy an SG105 and if then Sophos could be so kind to hand out free licenses for non-commercial users, just like it does with the virtual appliance.

I'm only interested in using country blocking and the webfilter, that's what I'm using the virtual appliance for (and also for collecting stats via the syslog)

Does anyone have thought about this as well, and even talked with Sophos about this? Or is there anyone from Sophos reading this and might contact the sales department and ask if that's possible?

sg105 is very very constrained in several areas the biggest one being ram.  UTM relaly requires 4 gigs to function well with 8 being my recommended minimum.  Virtualization isn't constraining..it's actually liberating.  You can then move from hardware to hardware by backing up the vm's files AND keeping your logs and config in place without having to do a rebuild.  Virtualization also gives you GREATER control over resource allocation on the machine.  Modern cpu's are very very suited for the tasks of virtualization and in the future I think bare metal is going to be the exception and not the rule.  it is already the exception for my clients.  For the amount of money it will cost for a resource constrained sg105 you can build a haswell or higher core 1-3 host that will easily run utm now and into the future.  Throw hyper-v or vmware on it and then install utm once the hypervisor config is completed.  Modern hypervisors have less than a 5% overhead(it has been shown to sometimes be FASTER than bare metal for things running inside the vm) so virtualization isn't a huge resource drain anymore.  The Haswell cpu's are beasts with even  "lowly" DC celeron being good enough for the 2xx series of appliance.  I replaced a core i-7 lynnfield system with an sg220(dc haswell celey) and it is handling the same amount of traffic with more speed and less loading.  The client has even added 3 new websites behind the utm with a minimal impact on the machine.

You can make a file modification to a hardware install (rename the file /etc/ASG), which will allow you to use a home use license on an appliance.  As far as Sophos handing out hardware unlimited-user licenses for free, not a chance of this ever happening.
