pc build help for a 160Mbit home network

Hi all

I've never used Sophos UTM before and I'm looking to give it a go.

I'm currently using this router - N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router TL-WDR4300 - Welcome to TP-LINK

My internet speed is 160Mbit and it will likely increase by 10-30Mbit every couple of years or less so I need some future proofing.

Can anyone suggest either a prebuilt unit (minus RAM and HDD is ok) or a spec list of parts (common ones available UK/Worldwide) please?

Requirements are just for it to be at least as fast as the above router, and things like IPS, Virus scanning, Proxy etc are optional which i'll experiment with but just assume they are not enabled as I am happy to pay less for a PC which can't run the optional extras. I just want high performance networking for gaming, browsing, downloading etc with a good firewall protecting me and OpenVPN for just occasional light access by me.

If this can be achieved within £200 - perfect, but i get the feeling I need to approach £300 to expect excellent performance.

    Here is one option that I was looking that I assume would give more than enough power for every extra feature desired at 160Mbit and beyond. Main issues with are the price, size of the case, and power draw.

    Hi and welcome,
    160mb/s full duplex?
    Being a home user you will not have many users.
    For storage, get a cheap spinning disk, last longer than an SSD, 5400 rpm or one similar.
    CPU looks good, but if your link speed is going to increase see if you can get a higher speed cpu. Dual core is fine. Especially if you wish to use a lot of the UTMs features.

    Envious of the line speed, do you actually get to download at that or close to that speed?

    Yeah fortunately the Virgin Media fibre infastructure in my area is really good. Been at this house a year and not 1 drop in connection and the speed is always at least 150 and usually 155+. Technically the line speed is supposed to be 152Mbit so getting near 160 is great [:D]

    Sadly not full duplex, upload speed is 12Mbit. Great for everything but uploading 1080p 60fps youtube videos! They take a while.

    Only 2 users (+ occasional guest).

    Was hoping to go for something lower spec (i.e. much cheaper) but I suspected I would need a fair bit of power. I will only be using the extra features like IPS though if they have no impact at all on response times (latency) and throughput. Really want to prioritise speed. As long as its at least as secure as default DD-WRT config I'm happy, anything above that (without a performance impact) is a bonus.

    I can agree with the hardware recommendations except for the cpu.  go with a haswell or higher core i-3 3.0 ghz or faster.  Also the Intel nics recommended are affected by n Intel Linux driver bug.  So i would recommend either broadcom netextreme II nics or Intel I21x series based nic.
