Couple of Quick Install Questions using ESXi VMware

Hey All -

A few quick questions please regarding installing Sophos UTM (Home) on a Core i7 box with 16 GB RAM and 2 Network Adapters.

1) During the install of VMWare ESXi - it attempted to locate a DHCP address - no DHCP servers exist so that couldn't happen.  What IP address and Gateway should be assigned?

2)  What is observed IP ranges?  (VMWare Client -> Configuration Tab -> Network Adapters ->  vmnic1)  The range is a few IPs but where did they originate from will it cause issues with Sophos UTM since these would fall in the DHCP Pool?

3) Any recommendations on VM configuration in terms of CPUs, Cores, Ram and Disk Space?  This is for a 400/400 speed internet connection, assume web filtering, scanning and IPS would be turned on.

    1) Expected if you don't already have a DHCP server running in your LAN. I normally set my ESXi box to an static IP in the LAN subnet, setting it above .200. Any IP really as long as it's outside the range of IP's the DHCP server is handing out. I typically setup most subnets such that .1-.99 is static infrastructure (printers, scanners, switches, routers), .100-.199 is DHCP assigned, and .200-.254 is servers (ESX,HyperV,Windows, Linux)

    2) Observed IP ranges is merely what the ESXi box is seeing on the wire hitting that particular vNIC. I tend to ignore it as it has no effect on how VM's run.

    3) I typically setup my UTM vm's with 2 vCPU, 8GB RAM, and 40/80GB disk space. Make sure you reserve as much CPU time for the UTM as IPS performance is bound to how fast the CPU's run. On a 400/400 connection, without careful tuning I doubt IPS will go that fast. Even with tuning, you need a lot of CPU and afaik, the fastest reported single stream on here was around 300.
