ESXi NIC Question

So I have been running the Home License on an old Dell 780 with 2 NICs and it has been great. But I am in the process of virtualizing it and I have a question about the NIC setup with ESXi.

I have a 4 port NIC in my ESXi host and was wondering if I give the UTM direct access to 2 of the ports via passthrough or can I just just set each port on its own vSwitch? Will the vSwitch setup be secure?

    There are also various, albeit subtle added benefits to using a vSwitch:

    • Hardware Compatibility - UTM only sees e1000 / e1000e / VMXNET3
    • ESXi Standby NIC's for failover, if you include two NIC's in a vSwitch
    • Reconfigure vSwitch vmnic adapters without having to reconfigure a VM
    • Incredibly easy to run HA/Cluster Active/Passive mode by setting up an identically configured VM
