I picked up a Novatel USB LTE Modem U679 planning on using it as a failover for a Sophos UTM. If it's relevant, it's from Bell, a Canadian carrier. Tested on my laptop with Bell's software, works fine.
However, when I tried it on the Sophos, have had a lot of difficulty. I followed the instructions at this link (https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/119010.aspx) but it keeps showing as [Down]. Wasn't quite sure why the instructions recommend selecting DSL(PPPoA/PPTP) for type, but did it anyway.
When I try selecting 3G/UMTS, nothing shows in the dropdown list for hardware. FWIW, it does show up for types DSL(PPPoA/PPTP), DSL(PPPoE) and Ethernet. However, regardless of what option I choose, status never changes from [Down]. The unit itself indicates that the cell network is available (it blinks blue) but never connects (it would turn solid blue). Shows up as "eth6 USB Novatel Wireless".
Since then I've searched on the forums for a solution or hints as to whether it's a configuration thing or if the USB modem just isn't compatible. This thread (https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/81/t/65273) seems to suggest that the Novatel is at least "known" to the Sophos UTM.
Based on what I've read to date, it seems USB modems are rather difficult to use with Sophos (and have seen the various references to the Cradlepoint devices). My preference would have been to use it but if it just won't work I plan just to return the USB and get a different LTE router that hooks up using Ethernet (which I understand would make life a lot simpler). I suppose I was just hoping that I might have missed something straightforward that would enable me to use the USB modem, as it's a bit smaller and, at least physical installation-wise, easier.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be most appreciated.
