Software version and Licensing

Hello everyone,

I have a situation where I have a UTM setup (software) and a sophos AP30.  The user has 50 user license on sophos.  They have 28 computers (IP's).  We have setup a hotspot for their wireless so that these users do not count against their licenses (per our Sophos sales engineer).

However, they use IP phones that are taking the rest of their licenses and then some.  I was wondering if there is any way to separate out all of the phones and have them not use the UTM protection and therefore not use a license.

And before anyone makes the comment, yes, I am aware that if we had an appliance instead of the software version then licensing would not be an issue.

    Hi gabigdawg,

    Given most IP phones I've seen use DHCP, you either have hard code(static IP) each one, or put them on their own seperate network (physical or vLAN) with a seperate DHCP server.

    Who makes the phones? Some (like cisco) offer a ethernet port on the back of the phone so can forward LAN traffic through the phone, leaving it untagged while the phone internally tags it's own traffic (also including QoS where possible). Cisco calls this 'voice vlan' and it's actually pretty slick, if pricey in Cisco's case as you need their switches.

    As mentioned before, it depends on the phones.  If they have two network connections (one for "network" and the other for "PC") then, likely, it can be configured as a VLAN trunk device.  The phones can be on their own VLAN and the PC's on another.  If the Sophos UTM isn't configured to know about the voice VLAN then it should not count those IP addresses and will keep your count to PC's only.  Unless the phones need Internet access for some reason...
