I3 or modern atom?

Hi,
I have used astaro home utm for a few nears now and want to change the hardware it's on.

I don't need vpn, but do want proxy/content filtering , av, firewall and ids. Our home cable speed is up to 50mbps.

There a 6 devices on the network which could require connectivity at once.  Would 2gb of ram with a new atom be enough or do I need an i3?

Thanks in advance

  • IPv6 uses IPsec with AES encryption.  Without AES-NI, I bet even the i3 wouldn't keep up with 50Mbps of inbound IPv6 traffic.

AES-NI only really benefits IPsec VPNs and encryption offloading. An i3 (with or without AES-NI) will perform just as well if not better than IPv4 due to the IPv6 stack being slimmer than IPv4.

Since the OP is not using VPNs of any sort the only minor performance impact will be if you are translating IPv6 to IPv4. There is no need for an i3 with 50Mb and 6 users, a newer Celeron (G1850) will suffice and save you around $60-80 on your build. This will also allow you to upgrade to an i3 or i5 down the road.
