I need some advices about hardware

Hello,

As I work as a network and system engineer, I've installed a Sophos UTM at home, running on an old computer :

Atom D510 with 2 network cards ( one on the motherboard, a Realtek) and an additionnal PCI Intel Network card. 

I have a 25 Mbps/1Mbps VDSL connection. 

The motherboard seems to have reliability problems, so I'm planning to change the hardware and I would like to buy hardware that will last and be able to handle an increased load : I think that in the next 2 years, I'll have a Fiber 500 Mbps/200 Mbps connection. 

I have selected this hardware :

1 x SuperMicro A1SAi-2750F mother board
2 x Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM 8 Go DDR3L 1333 MHz ECC CL9 
1 x Akasa Galileo case
1 x Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120 Go for storage

I don't really care if I'm stuck at 100 Mbps per connection, but there is about 30 network devices in my house.

What do you think of this hardware ? The key feature here is that it is absolutely noise less and that is a key component here for me.

    Thanks everyone for all your much valuable advice.

    Giving the fact that for the next 2 ou 3 years, my bandwidth will not change, I've ordered those parts :

    1 Jetway NF9N motherboard (2930 baytrail celeron) 
    1 expansion card (4 Intel 82574L Gigabit LAN ports)
    8 Gb of RAM

    It costs me a third of what I was previously willing to order and it will do the same work until my ISP upgrade me to fiber internet access. 

    And with the remaining, I'm upgrading my virtualization server to 32 Gb of RAM (as for now it's running on ITX hardware, I have to change the case and the motherboard to be able to upgrade it to 32Gb of RAM) AND I bought a brand new laptop for my wife's birthday. 

    So thanks a lot guys.

    Ok, I've received the parts, get them assembled and reinstalled the UTM. 

    I did yesterday evening a quick check of the throughput I can get throught the UTM, and I'm getting 512 Mbps with IPS on. All the IPS attack patterns are checked. Advanced Threat Prevention is ON too.

    I will post a full bench report as soon as I make one. 

    I'm not sure that my settings are good because the throughput is surprisingly high for a Celeron N2930.

    Hi,
    I had 3 seperate hardware devices all idling around 30w. I looked at the hardware and decided with extra ram the 2012 small office server could become a VM to see what it idled at. Ended up needing extra NICs as well.

    With a UTM, SUM and small 2012 home server the combination idles at 52w which is a reasonable saving. Electricity in Australia is not cheap.

    In case it is useful to someone, my 2012 Mac mini server (quad core i7) running the UTM in a VMware virtual machine (2 cores allocated) uses around 10 watts at idle. I cannot explain why it would be so much less than Ian's hardware, which is comparable.

    probably, because I am running 24gb ram, 6 disks (mostly 2.5") 4 NICs on seperate cards and a MS server.

    because that is a very low power version of the i7 with a correspondingly reduced clockspeed..[:)]

    I can't speak from experience because I'm getting ready to do my first install next week.

    I can tell you what I bought and feel pretty good about.

    I built  a box with a Supermicro X10SBA, which has a J1900 celeron fanless processor. I added 8GB ram, a 120GB crucial SSD, and a pico power supply. It's in a M350 case. It has 2 intel I210AT ports. Total cost was just at $400.

    My needs are not large but I plan to experiment with AV, IPS, and more. My internet speeds are moderate 25/5 but will probably go up to 50/10 eventually. It's the free version for home use.
