License for home use / lab

All appliances (with appropriate licensing) except for the lowest end SG series come with unlimited ip's. Appliance size ( therefore cost) will depend on how many users you have, how much traffic your servers generate, what features you want enabled, and how fast your internet is.

As your already running the home edition on your own equip. What is the server specs, resource usage, Internet, and enabled features?

Or you just take another Router and hide all the Devices behind him [:)]

While a technical solution to work around the IP count restriction, it's also a violation of the EULA. AvayaRedTech's solution of purchasing a unit may be more expensive, but it's also the right way to do this, and has the side benefit of giving him access to support.

None of the appliances automatically come with a license, but can, and often are, bundled with a license.  Be aware that the licenses are for limited periods of time (one, two, or three years).  The longer the term, the bigger the discount.  Contact a reseller for details.

Premium Support costs a little extra, but gives you access to Sophos Support, which is break-fix.

Standard Support comes with a license, which is support through your reseller.

I am currently running my sophos on a older hp rp5700 with 4gb ram, intel dual core and 3 gig cards in it, it is hooked to a cisco 24port switch with about 5 total vlans running, also plugged into a ESXi server with 4 gig ports, and a alarming amount of VM's for a home user.

I am also trying to cut down on how many things I have plugged in, adding a router in front of the sophos box will only complicate things and add to my electricity bill, not to mention I want to keep it legit.

I did find out that the license on all that I have looked at are for 1 - 3 years at at time, I am looking for a one time purchase deal. I really want to stick with sophos, just the firewall logging alone is hard to beat not to mention the html5 vpn portal to access my lab from anywhere. So far I am not having any luck finding anything [:(] 

I guess when you use the best, it is hard to use anything else....This is how they get you.. [:)]

Sophos doesn't offer one shot licenses, everything (even the free home use lic) has a expiry on it.

One shot licenses make sense for things like vSphere where you don't always need the latest & greatest. But, in the world of UTM & Security, keeping the various patterns up to date and the software abreast of changes in the security landscape has an associated cost and Sophos has chosen a quasi-subscription method (appliances are one-shot till their obsolete, licensing is subscription based) for this product.

Just a point of clarification, if the user has IP space that never needs to traverse the firewall (I suspect a lot of those devices may not need internet access, but maybe they do) then I do not think it would violate the EULA.  If you have devices on the network that do not have a gateway defined, I am not sure they would technically or legally violate the EULA.  I reserve the right to be wrong, of course.

That's one of those grey areas. [:)] Appliances it's a non-issue but on software licenses the EULA as I read it basically refers to protected devices. They count "protected devices" by looking at the IP addresses traversing the firewall. One can argue that a printer sitting on a LAN that never goes outside the LAN is not a protected device so shouldn't be counted. In that case, removing the gateway on the printer just ensures that the license counter doesn't misidentify the printer as "protected."
