Older i5 work OK?

I have an older Lynnfield i5-750 that isn't being used. I was thinking that I would get a mobo and use it for the Sophos box.

I know it's older tech, but it should be alright, yes? I've been reading about how some of the processes like higher clock speeds. Would I be better served getting something with more MHZ, like a Pentium Anniversary edition and OCing it to 4.0 MHZ?

I'm going to need another nic anyway to connect it to the switch, right? It should go modem -> sophos box -> switch, yes? If so, what is a good fast card?

Also, what are your thoughts on using a ssd? Think it would be thrashed? Does hdd speed even matter?

anything broadcom but the Intel 82574L nics are problematic uner linux(which is the most common chipset out there). so either a nic like this:
HP FS215AA PCI-Express Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Plus NIC - Newegg.com
or one like this:
Intel I210T1 Gigabit Ethernet Card - Newegg.com

either of these should work.

with how small your network is hdd's are fine...no need to waste money on ssd. Sophos doesn't begin doing ssd's until their higher end appliances for that very reason..[:)]

I've got to buy a drive anyways. Nobody makes HDDs small these days, so it would cost about the same as a SSD and it seems ridiculous to put a 1tb drive in this box. Newegg always has some SSD for sale around $50. If it won't hurt it, I might as well use the SSD. I just wasn't sure if it would be too many read/write cycles.

So which nic do you recommend? What is wrong with the $32 one on amazon EXPL9301CTBK Intel Gigabit CT? (at work, so can't link). Not second guessing your advice, I just want to learn what the differences are.

The nic you talked about is a desktop nic with the linux bug..stick
with tge recommended ones.

Smaller capacity ssds di not have good endurance. Stick with hdd.

Thanks for the hard drive link! I should probably check my desk, I bet I have one sitting in there that can be used.

Here's another question. Do you think it matters if I use a server class motherboard with ECC RAM, or any off the shelf enthusiast class board with regular RAM?

you can go either but ECC ram is always recommended for my clients..[:)]

At work, I use ECC for all servers.
At home, I only use ECC in my NAS system.
