Picking a system\build

I have some interesting options for running a UTM for primarily IPS/AV purposes for a Home LAN (1 user) with 50/5 connection.   (All or most rules for Win/Linux/Mobile)


Options:

Use my main computer (Filtering it's own connection) , i7-5930K running Win 8 (with VirtualBox or HyperV) running Sophos UTM (Have a 4 NIC PCIe card + mobo NIC)

Use AMD Phenom II X2 N620 HP LAPTOP (DV7-4053CL) 8Gb with working NICs - (Geekbench scores vs i3 in links below)


Would either of these work? I'm thinking about running Windows Server 2012 on the laptop with a VM UTM or just straight as a physical machine (not preferred probably long term)

My concern about using the i7 is that seems like a security and performance risk big time for both. (will be gaming some)

I really need some input on these.  I could get a third system but cash is a big concern.  The geekbench scores are below, i3's score 2800-3500, my laptop scores 2800.

    Ok for the throughput of network, but then I think that it's important specify WAN speed, I have 20Mb/1Mb ADSL and with 1 NAS that download at full speed of my ADSL I haven't problem.
    I agree with you about power/performance, but price/performance/power?
    I know that old UTM 100 is ATOM and sophos recomand up to 20 user, with 1Gbps FW, 140 Mbps IPS, 100 Mbps VPN, 50 Mbps Antivirus, 40000 concurrent connection.
    I don't know wich xDSL an how many "people/client" we are in home, but I think that if someone need more than 20 client (home is limited to 50 IP) and have at least a real 100Mbps the choice is buy the UTM hardware (price/performance), I'm wrong?

    I think 20 people at home are in BB or a SOHO not an home... [[:D]] [[:D]]
    In my home I have 1 Linux Server, 1 NAS, 1 managed switch, 1 iMac, 1 MacBook Pro, 1 iPad, 1 iPhone, 1 Nexs 2, 1 AppleTV, 2 WDTV, 1 Sat decoder with on-demand, 1 IP cam, 2 BD, 1 HT A/V and when there are friends other 10 device.

    The author of post specify 1 user 50/5 connection.
    For my scope, I have notice that the real difference is the amount of RAM, befor I have 2GB and it's always at 70%, now 4GB 36-40%
