Picking a system\build

I have some interesting options for running a UTM for primarily IPS/AV purposes for a Home LAN (1 user) with 50/5 connection.   (All or most rules for Win/Linux/Mobile)


Options:

Use my main computer (Filtering it's own connection) , i7-5930K running Win 8 (with VirtualBox or HyperV) running Sophos UTM (Have a 4 NIC PCIe card + mobo NIC)

Use AMD Phenom II X2 N620 HP LAPTOP (DV7-4053CL) 8Gb with working NICs - (Geekbench scores vs i3 in links below)


Would either of these work? I'm thinking about running Windows Server 2012 on the laptop with a VM UTM or just straight as a physical machine (not preferred probably long term)

My concern about using the i7 is that seems like a security and performance risk big time for both. (will be gaming some)

I really need some input on these.  I could get a third system but cash is a big concern.  The geekbench scores are below, i3's score 2800-3500, my laptop scores 2800.

    Licensing for microsoft server products changed for server 2012.  The licensing is as i described...I am not a Microsoft licensing expert but the basics are as i described for server essentials.  O/c the cpu isn't needed and introduces a higher probability of failure and data corruption.  Since you have already ordered the gear you can stick with it.  If this is a home setup then your setup is fine..I run my business off my setup so data integrity is key.  If you want to run SSd;s that's fine...[:)]  I would go with dual 1TB so you have enough space to actually do something.  Windows 2012 is going to take 40-60GB just for a base install...UTM requires at least 40-60 on it's own.  there goes your 120 and half of your 256.  

    Host:  Xeon E3-1220v2 3.10ghz QC 10 gigs ram (host OS server 2008 datacenter)2x broadcom gig-e, 2x intel gig-e, 2x 1.5TB RAID1 via dynamic mirror(host OS and primary AD Controller vm server 2008 enterprise) 2x 500GB RAID1 via dynamic mirror(UTM vm, win7 vm for malware isolation, SUM vm) I am not doing anything that requires really high I/O.  Sometimes things get a bit bunched up on patch tuesday when both Widnows server are installing updates but it's never caused performance problems on my network.  It's all about the design for your environment.
