Licensing Question

I have the home license and seem to keep hitting up against the 50 license limit.  I have two questions that I haven't found when looking around.

1)  I know the licenses are tied to ip addresses.  I had read on the forums that if I take out the gateway address on my internal devices that don't need internet access, that they won't count, but I'm not finding that to be true.  I have removed the gateway on all of my ip cameras, Cisco switches, VMware VMs that I test with that don't need to have internet access, but they keep getting counted back.  I saw they stay on for 7 days, but as some have renewed they are now showing twice!  I do point them to the UTM for NTP and DHCP, but nothing else.

2) Since I'm trying to mitigate my ip issue, but not having much luck, is there a way for me to buy a 25 user license to add to the free 50 home license?

I really like this product (I've used Sonicwall's at work and thought about getting a NSA 200, but this thing just seems slicker!).  I have it on a Supermicro MB with a 3.6 GHz i3-4160 and 8 GB of ram and it is so fast!

My other thoughts is if I moved all my VM's and ip cameras to a different VLAN or subnet that it would take care of this, but BOY that would be alot of work for my home network setup in terms of configuration and maintenance!

    Keep in mind that if you are using IPv6, that one device using that protocol will count as two devices against your license limit.  50 license cap is something that I don't understand as to how people are possibly reaching beyond that limit at home.  IPv6, sure I can see and I think that is a stupid model if that is enabled.  IPv4 though... 50 devices is actually quite a bit at home.

    It doesn't matter if you are removing the gateway addresses, you are still assigning them from DHCP, which is your UTM.

    If you buy a license, I don't know of a way to add it to a free 50 home license

    Maybe look and see if there is something you can do with all of those IP cameras or something.  How many devices do you really have that you are using?

    I do have ip6 turned off in the UTM.  I was afraid that because of using the UTM as my dhcp server it was counting those regardless of the gateway.  I could shuffle the dhcp server off to my wirless router.

    Wow, I'm embarassed to say I have around 4 physical computers, 8 ip cameras and the server recording them, 4 raspberry pi, two power edge servers running esxi and then probably around 20 various flavors of linux, some windows flavors, tablets, phones that connect to the wifi, roku, amazon fire, amazon echo, plex server, smart tv's, xbox, blu-ray players, .....the list goes on and on.......bad to have this habit.......[:D]  I'm in the tech field, so alot of this stuff is old, worthless stuff to mess and around and play with.  Not all of this is mine, some is kids and wife.

    Not all of this stuff needs internet access though, plus some of the stuff showing up as active license use is my Cisco PoE switches which are static ip addresses, can't figure out why they are showing up...

    I might need a 12 step program of some sort.

    That is the one thing I like about the unlimited licensing of the SG series, but I really prefer the tinkering and control of my own hardware.

    So to narrow down my thread, if there is no "addon" license available for say around 25 licenses.

    What constitutes an active license use?

    1)  If I use the UTM as a dhcp server, it is apparent that it counts which is logically strange since I'm not making use of any of it's subscription services.
    2)  What if I use the UTM as my internal network's NTP server, would that make it count each device as an active license?
    3) Does the unit count any traffic that it sees on the internal lan as an active device once it gets the device's ip address?  I'm still not sure how it is picking up my Cisco switches since they do not use DHCP and I think I have them pointed to my ntp service on one of my raspberry pi's, so they should not be communicating at all with the UTM.  I have even set their gateway to 0.0.0.0.

    Based on these questions, I guess I'll either create a VLAN or different subnet for all my devices that never need internet access.

    I certainly hope that if any Sophos employees read this that they know I am very appreciative of the 50 free licenses and feel I am an exception to a normal household, so I hope I don't come across as complaining.  They are helping me keep my kids safe from all the bad stuff that is out there.

    I will most likely later this year invest in a product of some flavor.
