Replacement hard drive

I am new to the UTM software and installed it on a old computer to try it out at home.  I plan to continue using the software and will upgrade the hard drive in the computer to a 256GB SSD.

Do I need to do a new installation of UTM on the SSD and then restore the backup I have made to bring in the settings I have so far, or is there any easier way - similar to ghosting the drive and then removing the old one?  Thanks.

    Just do a new install (it will be done very quickly), loop through the initial setup and after that restore your backup and your good to go.
    Whole process should take no longer than 15 - 30 minutes. You could also opt for a 64GB or a 128GB SSD, that's big enough. And choose a business grade SSD, since the UTM will write very frequently to the logfiles. The cheaper SSD's may wear out pretty soon.

    Thanks, I picked a Samsung 256GB SSD in case I decide to use the drive for something else later, it should be big enough for a clean Windows 7/8/10 install later.

    If I want to upgrade the old motherboard/cpu later, would I also want to do a new install and restore my backup file?  I will be using an Athlon64 x2 4600 with 4GB memory for now.

    Run SpinRite on level 2 to bring SSDs back to life.

    Hi, if the NICs change, you may need to re-install to get the UTM to recognize them.

    SSHD are basically a HDD with a small flash based cache on-board. Idea is routinely accessed files get stored in flash so they're faster to read. Works okay on a desktop where there's lot of routine file access (boot files, common apps like email, browser, etc) resulting in high cache hit counts. On the UTM however where there is a lot of random reads & writes, caching doesn't work nearly as well.

    Thanks for everyone's advice, I am just waiting for my SSD from Newegg to update the computer.  I have only been playing with the firewall for now, and even figured out how to get Vonage working with it, and will start turning on other items after the upgrade.
