Network Cable Requirement for HA/Cluster Configuration with VA

Hi All,

Quick question in terms of network cable connection to establish an HA or cluster configuration between 2 nodes running the Virtual Appliance.

The servers are Dell R610's. Do I need a crossover cable running between both servers directly, or do/can both nodes communicate their heartbeat via a network switch?

What is the suggested configuration?

Thanks

  • Best would be a crossover cable directly connected since it is one point of failure less.

  • We do this exact deployment as well. Pair of hardware servers with the virtual appliances running on top, crossover cable between each pair. Never tried it using a physical switch, but I can tell you that running HA over a Nexus 1000V distributed switch in VMware breaks the world.
  • Syncing only occurs over the HA interface.  If that connection is broken, only the heartbeat goes over the 'Backup interface'.

    Cheers - Bob
