Network Cable Requirement for HA/Cluster Configuration with VA

Hi All,

Quick question in terms of network cable connection to establish an HA or cluster configuration between 2 nodes running the Virtual Appliance.

The servers are Dell R610's. Do I need a crossover cable running between both servers directly, or do/can both nodes communicate their heartbeat via a network switch?

What is the suggested configuration?

Best would be a crossover cable directly connected since it is one point of failure less.

We do this exact deployment as well. Pair of hardware servers with the virtual appliances running on top, crossover cable between each pair. Never tried it using a physical switch, but I can tell you that running HA over a Nexus 1000V distributed switch in VMware breaks the world.

Syncing only occurs over the HA interface. If that connection is broken, only the heartbeat goes over the 'Backup interface'.
