restore backup from newer system

i cant believe this is even an issue, but when i have to reinstall sophos from scratch i should be able to restore my backup config file to it immediately. but no i have to go through countless up2date  upgrades before that can happen which means i have to go through and configure the system almost entirely before i can update which defeats the point of a backup.. any other workarounds?

    Older config-backups can be restored to newer versions, but not the other way around, due to new features and changes being added in newer versions.  What ISO are you installing with?  It may save you a good deal of time to download a newer ISO for installs.

    About those newer ISO images, the latest I can find now is the 9.306 image but I have a mix of 9.307 and 9.308 boxes. Since they removed the ISO images from the ftp.astaro.com servers the ones on https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/utm-downloads.aspx appear to be slightly dated versions and not updated as often as they were on the ftp.astaro.com site.

    Any chance you can point me in the direction of ISO for 9.307 or 9.308?

    There aren't any.  9.306 is the most recent available.  Not every up2date gets a new ISO, usually every 2 or 3 a new ISO is generated.

    At least it's only 1 or 2 up2dates and not countless.

    I had this issue a few days ago.

    The workaround I'm going for is to keep an old config which matches the ISO in case of need.  Then  can reinstall apply a 90% config, update the system online and restore my latest backup ! After years of IT work it seems the least bad option. Its clunky, horrible, but to me seems the best workaround - unless a guru on here knows better ?

    Guys, it takes a few minutes to do enough configuration to be able to start getting Up2Dates going.  That said, I'm always deep in backups in all my client sites, and it's also just a minute to grab several backups from their UTM including the most recent ones and the latest one matching an ISO.

    You don't even have to grab them from the UTM.  You can set it up so that config-backups are emailed to you on a scheduled basis automatically.
