Kill running Up2Date process?

1)
is it possible to kill a running up2date process?
If yes, how?

2)
Would it be possible to make the up2date process more intelligent?
In our case, there was problems getting 9.305 updated, failed and restarted a couple minutes again. As a result the firewall sends 100s of mails and there are a lot of short outages. My workaround was deleting the u2d files.
Would it be nice, that the up2date process registers a failed try, retries 3 times and then gives up by itself?
