Not able to access WebAdmin, fresh install

I recently switched from PfSence to UTM home, however I am having a issue that is keeping me form finishing the switch over to the sophos system. My issue is this, I am using a gigabyte motherboard with dual realtek Ethernet ports on it. The os loads, installs and so on but however when I connect a pc to  the system, the pc dose not see the UTM. I have been looking around for any information on this because it surprised me that it is not able to be set up like my pfsence box was. I have tried a hub, cross over cable, having a router in between the UTM and my computer, and also I downloaded the os 6 different times and have burnt multiple images and installed the os multiple times. As I am not very experienced in this area yet I am hoping someone will be able to help or has experienced this before and found a solution.

The pc is not getting a Ip address from the utm box.

    Thanks for asking that jaretw2, and for the infformative reply Scott. I kinda' found thie soluttion to that  problem through just  thinking about it and using what knowledge of networking I have; if there are no addresses being offered (and I saw this through observation on Wireshark), we have to have SOME way to communicate, so I just set up a static address on the Windows machine I was using as a  client, using
    UTM's eth0 adress as the DNS, and using the same netmask, and just assigning an address in the range of available addresses. 'Worked a whole lot better than 169.x.x.x [:)] !
