intel NUC and usb NIC

I have an i5 NUC + USB network cards setup running right now and it works pretty well. I used a couple of these Lenovo USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapters as WAN connections. They've been able to push ~20mbit/s (max for the DSL connections I have) at ~5-10% CPU so definitely room to go faster if your internet connection allows.

Hi mb_:  I've got a i5 NUC that I'm looking at re-purposing into a UTM firewall (8GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, 1 GB NIC, 1xUSB3.0, 2xUSB2.0).  In the configuration you described above:

- did you load Sophos "bare metal" or in a hypervisor
- are you running the full suite of apps (AV, etc.)?
- what snags did you run into upon installation

Thanks for any information you can provide.  I've got a home network with about 30-40 devices "live" at any time, and it looks like this may be the perfect solution to my question.

My setup uses ESXi 5.5 (I run a couple of other VMs on the box as well) without issue. Everything except Application Control is enabled - CPU (2 cores) and RAM (3GB) usage both seem within a comfortable range.

No real issues on the install / setup, just had to make sure the USB adapter was plugged in and connected during install. The only issue came when I added a second USB adapter that caused the eth[x] ports to renumber on the UTM (i.e., the UTM thought that one WAN1 was WAN2 and vice versa).

Thanks for the reply.  Did you try to load Sophos UTM stand-alone on the NUC?  I'd like to use this as a single-function box, and loading CentOS+VMware Workstation just to run a single app adds unnecessary complexity.  Or, is the VM NIC translation required for the USB NIC to be recognized by Sophos UTM?

I would be suprised if ESXi supported USB NICs... 

I really recommend using proper NICs for decent UTM performance... Intel & Broadcom PCI/PCIe NICs are best for UTM and ESXi.

Another user posted that the NUCs have a mini-PCI slot (normally for a WiFi NIC) which can be used for an Intel gigE NIC if you're willing to make a hole on the back of the chassis.

I didn't try a bare metal load, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. ESXi doesn't virtualize the USB NICs, so they're just passed through to the UTM VM as directly connected hardware (the UTM initializes the USB device and loads the corresponding drivers).

I'm not too surprised you can get 40mbps, but I wouldn't expect to see 100mbps with USB NICs and low CPU utilization.

No, neither would I (I edited my previous while you were replying it seems). That said, I struggle to get more than 300Mbit/s without hitting 50-60% on a completely virtualized UTM with (virtual) 10G NICs when all the options are enabled.
