Sophos UTM Hostname - Exchange 2007 & VPN

I've purchased and installed the Sophos UTM software as a replacement for an ageing ISA Server installation.

My employer has an Exchange 2007 server and makes use of a VPN connection for external staff. We use the following external names: webmail.mycompany.com & autodiscover.mycompany.com for our Exchange 2007 server  & vpn.mycompany.com for the VPN access.

What name should I use for the UTM's hostname? I've read the Rulz post which says about making sure the hostname is an FQDN resolvable to our public DNS. Can I go with a brand new hostname such as utm.ourcompany.com and then add this to our public DNS record or should I use something else in order to be able to grant access to Exchange and the VPN? TIA

  • Will you be using the UTM built in remote access?
    If yes, choose vpn.mycompany.com.

If no, go with whatever hostname you like, as long as ist is publicly resolvable.

    Private Setup:

    • XG: HPE DL20 Gen9 (Core i3-7300, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD) | XG 18.0 (Home License) with: Web Protection, Site-to-Site-VPN (IPSec, RED-Tunnel), Remote Access (SSL, HTML5)
    • UTM: 2 vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 50GB vHDD, 2 vNICs on vServer (KVM) | UTM 9.7 (Home License) with: Email Protection, Webserver Protection, RED-Tunnel (server)
  • Thanks for the quick reply. The UTM remote access looks pretty great so I think it will be something that we look to use.

    vpn.mycompany.com it is then!

    Thanks again.
