Difference between basic and total protect

I have a question about the basic vs total protect that the guy I was talking to didn't seem to have an answer to.  Most of my needs seem to be covered by the SG230 and basic, except maybe the web protection.  I want to have a standard proxy for primary access for users that falls back to a transparent proxy if mobile devices connect.  The doc I was sent doesn't seem to indicate if this is allowed with the basic license.

    I assume your asking about the difference between Basic Guard & Full Guard? "Total Protect" is a UTM bundle consisting of a FullGuard subscription, Appliance, 24/7 Support, and an AP in certain packages.

    The BasicGuard subscription is only available on UTM 100/110 so on an SG230, you either have FullGuard (everything) or individual subscriptions (network, web, email, etc)

    Yep, that makes sense.  I was confused about the interchanging of the term "total and full".  

    There was also some confusion on my part that basic was available on the SG2xx series appliances.  Sounds like it's full or individual.

    One more question along these lines:   

    If I bought a software only license and then bought an appliance in a couple months would they give me a discount on the license cost on the appliance, or is the software license cost sunk?

    Go to https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/unified-threat-management/tech-specs.aspx , and click on the Free Trial.  They can send you an appliance with a trial license.  If you decide to buy, you pay for the appliance you already have and the full license.

    basicguard on a 230 not the 1xx series?  I didn't know basicguard was still available at all after the retirement of the UTM series.

    @William: It's still in some marketing lit (and on my suppliers SKU list) even tho I haven't seen it on the sheets in a while. I figured the SG1xx series have basically replaced it

    Strange.  I talked to two vendors and they said they don't do evaluation units.  One sounded like I was just wasting his time.

    I filled out the form on the sophos website.  Maybe I'll have more luck with that.
