Integrated wireless on SG1xx appliances

Hi,

I am pritty much decided to go for one of the SG1xx appliances with wireless as buying the hardware, getting the home use license and the relevant wireless access point is not hugely cheaper than buying the official hardware.  My question relates to the integrated wireless support on these units - has anyone got real-world experience of using one in a SOHO environment?  Also, do you know what wireless standards are supported (i.e, 5GHZ etc)?

    Hi,

    It's not 100% clear if the integrated wireless will work with a home license, so you might want to wait for confirmation.

    Using off-the-shelf hardware with the external Sophos APs is still supported, afaik.

    Different models have different standards; e.g. the AP30 does not do 5GHz and the AP50 does.

    An FYI:  If you are just VPNing into work in the evenings or doing some take-home work, and the rest is personal usage for you and your family, you're fine.  If you're running a business from home, then you cannot use the Home License and must purchase one to be legal and abide by the terms of licensing.

    Hi,

    I was looking to use the proper license for the first year or so with the hardware, possibly converting to home license after the end of the support term.  Buying the hardware, AP, and powering the AP through a POE switch is only slightly cheaper than buying the appliance, and then it is an integrated solution including the wireless.

    So going back to the original question, does anyone know anything about the AP in the SG1xx appliances?

    What's for sure, though: The integrated wireless supports only either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz - It doesn't have two radios!

    The 105/115 have 802.11b/g/n and the 125/135 have 802.11b/g/n/ac which means the 125 and 135 have 2.4GHz and 5GHz.  I don't know how many people will have experience with them, I don't know if they have even shipped any to customers yet.

    There is always an advantage to external APs, which is that you can place them in a better location without having to relocate the router.

    Yes they have 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz support, but cannot use both bands simultaneously (only one radio).

    BTW: The home license works just fine with local AP.

    As far as a Sophos technican told me, there should be AP-15-similar Hardware built into the SG 105w - 135w series. Furthermore he accredited that it's the same WiFi-Hardware they are using for all 4 Models, that's a statement I wondered myself because of the different ac-Specification for 125w-135w. 

    Does anybody know more details about this?

    According to the official specs, AP15 has only *one* radio as well.

    Does anyone have a photo of what this looks like?
    or pricing?

    (Having a device with antennas in an equipment closet does not seem to make technical sense? or maybe I am missing something?)

    Couldn't agree more on this one.  I think these are being marketed to one or two room offices to sit on a desktop or shelf.
