Throughput questions

Hi I'm not sure if this is in the proper board.   I was wondering about what makes up the limits of the Throughputs for the devices?

For Example a UTM 110 and 120 are the exact same Device.  But the 110 has a firewall throughput of 1Gbps and the 120 has a 1.8Gbps?

Is it the license key that controls it or something else?

If I was to use a spare pc unit and install the UTM with home license and gigabit networks  how is the throughputs calculated on for it is it comparable to the lower hardware devices or mid to larger ones?

    Probably a license thing..but the UTM series are deprecated.  It is all about the SG series.  

    For a home license there are no limits imposed except for a few screen customization and the number of devices(50).  Otherwise it is all about the hardware.  What is your network environment both wan and lan and how many users and which modules are you looking to use?

    Note those throughput numbers are with all features off except firewall rules and routing.

    My HP micro-server can do 900mbps with a single stream, higher with multiple streams, but if I turn the IPS on, it drops to 70mbps per stream for HTTP.

    Version 9.2x may have faster IPS performance, I haven't tested.

    If you have multiple LANs / DMZs, you can create IPS exceptions for local traffic.

    How fast is your internet connection?

    My question is more of a general question.  I currently don't have any problems it was just something the crossed my mind.  Just wondering if there was a major difference in performance of building your own box compared to an appliance

    There can be, depending on the components used and exact model and revision of appliance.  General rule is more is better.  [:)]
