compact dual NIC pc

Looking at the block diagram for the designs Intense PC Business i3 | Buy online from the Intense PC range | Tiny Green PC the only issue I can see possibly is the Realtek RTL8111F NIC on port two. Should be okay for home use but experience on the board here is that Realtek NIC's don't stand up under load as well as the Broadcom & Intel ones.

If you get one, put the Realtek NIC on the WAN connection, and use the Intel for your LAN / VLANs.

The i3-4010U CPU is on the slow end of the Haswell range, but should be fine for most connections.

I'd avoid the SSD/mSATA drives unless they have have Pro or Enterprise grade ones, at last 60GB.

Ok thanks, they have i5's as well. Should be enough for a 100/10 mbit/sec line with IPS and AV on I suppose? No SSD, is that because a traditional disk is more reliable in a 24/7 situation?

The firewall does a lot of small writes to disk during normal operation, which is hard on an SSD. Unlike spinning rust disks(HDDs), SSD's have a finite lifespan as each storage cell can only accept a certain number of writes before it dies. The Pro or Enterprise grade SSD's are designed for more write cycles over the lifespan of the drive so tend to stand up better under this application.

The i3 should handle 100mbps, but get the i5 if you have a lot of users.

If you think you might upgrade to 150mbps+ soon, you should try to find an i3 or i5 with a higher clock speed.

Thanks for your help. One more question, is it possible to easily install the UTM Home Edition from USB? The mentioned machines don't have a DVD-drive. Perfhaps there's a manual somewhere on how to do this?

No. You have to use a CD-Drive-Emulating-Device (External CD Drive, USB Drive which is emulating a CD Drive)
