Unexpected Error after Restore

In order to reconfigure my UTM with a different hostname, I followed Slickone's procedure (https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/58/t/55244) to restore a working configuration, minus the admin info. However, I am unable to proceed with Basic Setup because I get the following error on the Welcome screen:

"Unexpected error in basic_setup: Can't use string ("0") as a HASH ref wile "strict refs" in use at /Object/aaa/user.pm line 162."

I have no idea how to proceed and do not wish to start from scratch.
Thanks in advance

  • Hi, and welcome to the User BB!

If you have an unencrypted backup, copy it into the root directory of a USB memory stick and then reboot the UTM with the memory stick inserted.  That will at least get you back into WebAdmin where you can make a new backup for the Slickone trick.

    Cheers - Bob

  • Thanks, Bob. I ended up reinstalling from ISO and restoring from a full, unencrypted backup. However, I would still like to try using Slickone's trick, I'm just not sure what I did wrong. When I created a backup, I checked the boxes to remove Unique Site data and administrative mail addresses. Did I miss something?

I initially setup the hostname as SOHPOS, but I'd rather use UTM. Since I have control of both internal and external DNS, would it be safe to just stick with SOPHOS and add DNS entries for UTM?
