Sophos UTM 9.2 and SSD

Good Morning Everybody,

This is my first visit and first query on this forum, I will try my best to follow the rules.

I have a small issue and wonder if somebody can help from the forum. We are trying to intall Sophos UTM software version on hardware purchased from SuperMicro. It is a chasis with SuperMicro SC823MTO-R700UB mother board with a Samsung SSD and six Intel 1Gig NIC ports installed.

The issue is when I install the software on the new hardware using the Sophos UTM software bootable CD it detects and shows all the NICs and Samsung SSD and goes through the installation copy all files…. (and it looks smooth). At the finish of the installation process it tries to eject the CD before restarting but could not do so.
So I eject the CD manually and restart. Computer restarts but it does not boot and start Sophos software and it looks like that Sophos is unable to run from the HDD..

Now my guess is that it is something to do with some bios setting OR hardware controller setting that is link to SSD and CD OR Sophos driver for these hardware, as it looks after installation Sophos is not able to detect both of those (that could be the reason that after full installation Sophos is not able to eject the CD). During the installation it detects all network cards and hard disk showing proper model and name.

Is there any specific setting for SSD for sophos software etc. or what should I do. Help please.

Hi, Mohsin, and welcome to the User BB!

The first thing I would try is burning a new CD at 4x or slower and then installing with that.

I'm running my UTM at home on an SSD, never had problems so far.

What error do you get if it tries to boot from SSD?

At the end of the installation, or during the install already, you're may be able to press Ctrl+Alt+Fxx (Fxx = F1-F12). Most Linux installers have a console where they print messages on. Most likely F11 or F12, but never tried it on a UTM. Maybe there are some interesting messages there.

make sure you have the bios raid turned off. the only two hard drive controller modes supported are ahci or ide.

the ssd isn't the issue as many of the new sg appliances have ssd's in them...[:)]

Hi,

Are you getting a GRUB message?

A remote possibility (I don't think it'd install in this case but it's worth a shot):
older versions of the UTM have had problems with disks with GPT partition tables; I don't know if that was ever fixed...
Try using a tool such as GPartEd to delete all the partition tables, or the Samsung SSD tool to do a SecureErase.

Hello Everybody,
I have the same issue. I like Sophos UTM product and wanted to setup a firewall for home.
I have put together an old hardware: Pentium 4 CPU w/hyper-threading, 1GB of RAM, 3 NICs - all meets minimum requirements. This hardware is operational, because it was used to run Windows XP before.
So, I burned the image (asg-9.304-9.1.iso) onto a DVD and booted it up. As it was said in the first post, there was no issues with the hardware, all detected, but after reboot, it shows a sort of operating system, that I am not familiar with:
GNU GRUB version 0.97 (639K lower / 1047232K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. ... ]
grub>_
Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong please?

I can answer my question now...
I chose not to install the Enterprise Toolkit of Sophos UTM 9.3 on the Enterprise Toolkit screen.
The right answer was "Yes".
