Migrating from 220 to SG Series

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in doing an upgrade in UTM hardware?

My company is replacing the 220 unit for a SG330 and im happy rebuilding the unit from scratch but its gonna take some time so I asked Sophos support if I could backup the 220 and restore it onto the 330 but they weren't sure and gave me the answer "it might work".

Any feedback or experience on this would be great. Personally I don't think it would work because the hardware being different

    Hi bobcatbird,

    The config backup generated by the UTM webadmin is hardware independent so as long as the new SG appliance has the same or more Ethernet ports then the UTM 220, you should be fine to upload the 220's backup into the SG 330. You will lose anything bound to the box so things like logs, historical reports, mail waiting in queues, etc.

    I'm not sure what question you asked because this is exceedingly easy.  Download a recent, unencrypted Configuration Backup to the root directory of a USB memory stick, insert the stick into the new SG330 and power it up.  Done!

    You might want to change the internal IP on the old 220 so that you can keep it online to access it to look at old logs and reporting.

    With Sophos's reply of "it might work" had me scheduling an entire weekend of downtime for this and planning to manually rebuilding the whole lot on the new appliance.

    actually if you don't mind me asking, what about certificates for the likes of SSL VPN clients, will I have to regenerate those for the clients?

    No, they are part of the backup.

    But make sure you have the license file ready, because you will be asked for it after first logon at the new SG330.

    Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for your inputs. I carried out the upgrade and it went really well. The only thing I should have done was patched the SG330 to match the 220 but it still took the config, allowed me to patch it and then restored the config again and job done.
